The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, declaring that military rule must never return to the country.
Speaking during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in Zaria, Kaduna State, Abbas said Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule represents the longest period of civilian governance in the nation’s history and stands as a testament to the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes.
The Speaker paid glowing tributes to democracy icons, including M.K.O. Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Aminu Kano, Balarabe Musa, and Bala Usman, noting that Nigeria’s democratic journey was built on their sacrifices and commitment to justice.
According to Abbas, democracy remains the best system of government because it empowers citizens to hold leaders accountable and effect change through the ballot box rather than violence.
He highlighted key democratic milestones achieved over the years, including the peaceful transfer of power in 2015 and the growing influence of voters in determining electoral outcomes across the country.
The Speaker also underscored the constitutional amendment efforts being pursued by the 10th National Assembly to strengthen governance and address security challenges.
He disclosed that lawmakers had advanced proposals on state policing, electoral reforms, local government autonomy, independent candidacy, and greater political participation for women.
According to him, the reforms are aimed at deepening democracy, strengthening institutions, and providing sustainable solutions to insecurity and governance challenges.
On the economy, Abbas expressed confidence in the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the administration inherited significant economic challenges but has begun laying the foundation for long-term growth and prosperity.
He cited improvements in government revenue generation, foreign reserves, infrastructure development, student loan programmes, healthcare expansion, and increased security funding as indicators that ongoing reforms are producing positive results.
“As 2027 approaches, this is not the time to change course. The foundation is being laid for a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria,” the Speaker said.
Abbas urged political actors across party lines to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections and refrain from exploiting ethnic, religious, or regional differences for political advantage.
He also encouraged young Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process by registering to vote, seeking elective offices, building businesses, and holding public officials accountable.
As part of activities marking Democracy Day, the Speaker distributed motorcycles to 1,000 teachers drawn from primary and secondary schools across Zaria Federal Constituency.
He said the initiative was designed to improve teachers’ mobility and support the education sector, emphasizing that no nation can rise above the quality of its teachers.
Abbas further urged the beneficiaries to continue instilling values of honesty, patriotism, discipline, and hard work in younger generations while educating students about the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s democracy heroes.
