Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has approved a series of strategic appointments in its Directorate of Sports as part of efforts to strengthen sports administration, promote wellness programmes, and enhance participation in competitive sports.
The appointments were approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, according to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, on Monday.
Among the appointments is that of Coach Emmanuel Shibi as Coordinator of the Staff Sports and Wellness Programme, reviving an initiative that had remained inactive since it was established more than a decade ago.
Dr. Ahmed Sani Getso of the Directorate of Sports was appointed Deputy Director with responsibility for Student-Athlete Academic Services. He is expected to develop and coordinate academic support programmes for student-athletes.
Also appointed is Alhaji Sani Lawal as Deputy Director for Student Recreation, Fitness and Wellness. He will oversee the development and coordination of recreational sports programmes for students.
Mr. Abdullahi Baba Ndana was named Deputy Director, Competitions and Athlete Development. His responsibilities include coordinating the university’s competitive sports programmes and implementing strategies for talent identification and athlete development.
In addition, Dr. Mubarak Umar was appointed Assistant Director for Sports Facilities, Infrastructure and Events Management. He will provide leadership in the planning, maintenance, utilisation, development and modernisation of the university’s sports facilities and infrastructure.
Prof. Ahmed said the appointments were based on the appointees’ experience, commitment and demonstrated capacity to contribute to sports administration within the institution.
He noted that the appointments form part of ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the Directorate of Sports, strengthening institutional capacity, improving sports participation, enhancing athlete development and ensuring efficient management of sports facilities and events in line with global best practices.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that the newly appointed officials would bring professionalism, innovation, accountability and dedication to advancing sports development at the university.
