The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has led a Nigerian delegation to the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for the Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections currently taking place in the Republic of Korea.
The programme, which is being held in Seoul from May 29 to June 5, 2026, brings together election management bodies, electoral experts, and international observers from across the world to observe the conduct of local government elections and exchange knowledge on electoral processes and administration.
Prof. Amupitan participated in the programme on Friday alongside other election officials and stakeholders, underscoring INEC’s commitment to strengthening electoral governance through international collaboration and the adoption of global best practices.
The INEC Chairman was accompanied by National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and the Commission’s Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.
The election observation programme provides a platform for participants to assess electoral processes, share experiences, and discuss innovations aimed at enhancing transparency, credibility, and efficiency in election management.
INEC said the participation of its delegation is expected to deepen the Commission’s understanding of emerging trends in election administration, observation, and electoral governance.
The Commission noted that insights gained from the programme would contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system and align its practices with international standards.
The Republic of Korea’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections are regarded as an important democratic exercise, attracting the attention of election management bodies and observers interested in learning from the country’s electoral framework and administration.
