The Kano State Agency for Mass Education (SAME) is making great strides in promoting literacy and vocational training in the state.
With over 20,000 learners enrolled in its Second Chance education and vocational training programs, SAME is providing opportunities for adults, youths, and out-of-school children to acquire new skills.
According to the acting executive secretary Alhaji Surajo Mahe Alkali, established in 1980, SAME’s mission is to eradicate illiteracy through continuing education and vocational training.
He noted that, the agency offers conventional and intervention programs, including 65 conventional classes with 9,220 female learners across 44 local government areas, and 29 girl child classes with 865 learners.
He stressed that , SAME’s programs are designed to be inclusive and flexible.
“For instance, the 29 girl child classes cater to out-of-school girls who can receive knowledge and sell their goods within the centers during breaks”
The acting executive secretary explained that , the digital literacy by Radio program operates 88 classes with 50 learners each, targeting children between the ages of 9-15 years.
Alhaji Surajo hinted that, SAME also incorporates vocational skills into its literacy program, offering entrepreneurship training in areas like home economics, fashion, and design among others.
He pointed out that, the agency’s efforts are aligned with the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education’s goal to eradicate illiteracy and provide continuing education for sustainable development.
“Overall, SAME’s initiatives are crucial in promoting education and skills development in Kano State, and its programs serve as a model for other states to follow”
