The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI) has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day, calling for stronger action to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with albinism.
In a statement issued by its Coordinator, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, the organization said this year’s theme, “Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones,” highlights the urgent need to address colour-based discrimination, harmful stereotypes, stigma, and social exclusion faced by persons with albinism worldwide.
According to V-PeSDI, the theme serves as a rallying call for governments, institutions, communities, and individuals to recognize and uphold the dignity, safety, inclusion, mental well-being, and fundamental rights of persons with albinism.
The organization noted that despite growing awareness, many persons with albinism continue to face discrimination in education, employment, healthcare, and social participation. It added that harmful myths, prejudice, bullying, and systemic barriers often limit their opportunities and ability to realize their full potential.
“These challenges not only undermine their fundamental human rights but also hinder efforts toward building inclusive and equitable societies,” the statement said.
V-PeSDI urged governments at all levels to strengthen policies and programmes that safeguard the rights of persons with albinism, improve access to quality healthcare services—including skin cancer prevention and treatment—and expand inclusive education and employment opportunities.
The organization also called on public and private institutions to eliminate discriminatory practices within workplaces, schools, and service delivery systems, while creating safe and accessible environments where persons with albinism can thrive.
Furthermore, V-PeSDI appealed to community leaders, religious institutions, and the media to challenge harmful stereotypes and misinformation by promoting positive narratives that foster respect for diversity and inclusion.
The group encouraged development partners and civil society organizations to support advocacy efforts, awareness campaigns, capacity-building initiatives, and programmes aimed at advancing the rights, protection, and empowerment of persons with albinism.
It also urged citizens and communities to embrace diversity, celebrate all skin tones, and stand firmly against discrimination, exclusion, and violence in all forms.
Reaffirming its commitment to vulnerable populations, V-PeSDI stressed that every individual, regardless of skin colour or genetic condition, deserves equal opportunities, respect, and the freedom to live with dignity.
The organization emphasized that building an inclusive society requires collective action, greater understanding, and a shared commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.
As the world marks International Albinism Awareness Day 2026, V-PeSDI renewed its pledge to promote inclusion, equality, and social justice for persons with albinism and other vulnerable groups, calling on all stakeholders to work together to create communities where everyone can live, participate, and contribute without fear of discrimination.
